Curfew in various parts of Varanasi after clashes between protesters and police
Curfew was imposed for a short period today in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh after clashes between the protesters and police.
The violence took place during the protest today against the action of police on September 22 on a religious procession during the immersion of of Ganesha Idols.
Police did the lathi-charge on a religious leader and his followers who were heading to the banks of river Ganga for the immersion ritual, led to anger.
Today, several religious leaders took out a protest march in the afternoon and locals also joined in.
When the march reached the main crossing of the city, there were stone throwing between the police and protesters, who allegedly burnt vehicles. The police also use batons.
The curfew has been imposed in areas like Dashashwamedh, Chowk, Kotwali, and Luxa.
