Narendra Modi seeks Ireland's support for India bid in UNSC, NSG

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday sought Ireland's support for India's membership of UN Security Council and international export control regimes including NSG during world wide ranging talks with his Irish counterpart which also covered global challenges like terror and radicalism.

During his visit to Ireland, first by any Prime Minister in 59 years, held talk with his Irish counterpart Enda Kenny after which he hoped that Ireland's visa policy will be sensitive to the requirements of India' IT firms.

"I was pleased to exchange the views on a board range of international challenges, including terrorism, radicalism and the situation in Europe and Asia," Modi said at a joint media event with Kenny .

Thanking Ireland for its support which was crucial for India specific exemption for Nuclear Supplier Group (NSG) in 2008, Modi said.

"I have now sought Ireland's support for India's membership will deepen our bilateral cooperation and strengthen international non-proliferation efforts," he added.

I this context he asserted that India has been a leading voice on universal nuclear disarmament since independence and will remain strongly committed to that goal.

The Prime Minister also sought Ireland's support for the reforms of the UNSC within a fixed time frame in particular, for successful conclusion of inter governmental negotiations in 70th year of United Nations.

"I also sought his support for India's permanent membership of the reformed Security Council," Modi added.

India and Ireland are fastest growing economies of Europe and Asia.

Greater sensitivity of the European Union to India's commercial interests and challenges will help us to resume discussions on India-EU-Board based Trade and Investment Agreement," Modi said.

From Dublin Modi will leave to New York to address Sustainable Development Summit and participate in a summit on peacekeeping being hosted by US President Barack Obama.

He will then visit West Coast of US where he will address the Indian Community in Silicon Valley and hold meetings with top tech CEO's as a part of his two nations tour which concludes on 29th September.
