Maldives vice president arrested over plot to assassinate president

Maldives Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was arrested on Sunday, on suspicions on links in the blast on President boat which took place on September 28. The explosion had occured on the boat which was carring President Abdulla Yameen on his return from the Hajj Pilgrimage.

According to the police officials, Adeeb was arrested on the airport after he returned from an official visit to China.

While the President escaped uninjured in the explosion, his wife Fatima Ibrahim and two others suffered injuries.

The cause of the explosion is yet to be certified. The explosive device was kept under the seat which was usually occupied by the president.

The authorities suspect the the blast was an attempt to assassinate the president and has launched the criminal investigation.

"The police have not ruled out anything yet. They are doing a through investigation here locally and we are not certain at the moment weather it's an accident or a deliberate attempt on the president's life," said cabinate minister Mohamed Shareef.
