Ecuador Earthquake: A Strong Earthquake of 7.8 Magnitude Hit Ecuador, Killing 77

A strong earthquake of 7.8 magnitude hit Ecuador's central cost, killing 77 people and almost 588 people have been injured.

The earthquake hit on Saturday night nearly just before 7 P.M local time, Vice President Jorge Glas said in a televised address. Nearly 600 people have been injured, he said adding that the death troll is expected to arise as more information comes in.

A state of emergency has been in effect for six provinces but Glas urged those who left their home in coastal areas to return, as the Tsunami alert has been lifted.

President Rafael Correa declared national emergency and said the Tremblor was the strongest quake hit Ecuador since 1979.

"Our infinite love to the families of the dead." Correa said on Twitter, while cutting short a trip to Italy to return home.

3500 people have been dispatched to the affected areas. Meanwhile, the Home Ministry said five helicopters and 80 buses were ferrying 4,000 police to the quake zone.
