Bihar rejects Amit Shah's High-Pitched campaign

The result of Bihar's Assembly elections is not only a surprise but also a huge loss for BJP as well as PM Narendra Modi.

It reconfirms yet again that psephology remains in India a highly inexact science and polls are unable to accurate gauge voters mood.

The prediction was horribly wrong in Delhi Assembly elections, but no pollsters had a clue about the scale of newbie Aam Admi Party's victory.

Arguably, some Exit Polls were broadly right in Lok Sabha Elections of 2014, maybe because Modi's wave was too huge to miss.Even ordinary people were convinced that Narendra Modi was heading for a Landslide win, pollsters merely reaffirmed public sentiment.

Looking at the margin of victory of Mahagathbandhan in Bihar, it is strange that every opinion poll declared it a too close call till Saturday, a day before the counting of the votes. Those who were bold enough to predict the outcome either gave a narrow lead to Mahahagathbandan(Grand Alliance) or an edge to the BJP.

It seems that the low key GA campaign and its decision to project Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister candidate did the trick, with voters rejecting the high pitched BJP campaign crafted by party president Amit Shah.

The BJP did not make effort to highlight the supra-caste agenda by pushing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the party campaigner along with its president Amit Shah. But Bihari sub-national pride did not reconcile itself to the party not projecting the local leaders- the ghr Bahari vs Bihari slogan craftily coined by the Nitish-Lalu duo seemed to receive traction as the campaign progressed.

The results will pose larger problems for PM Narendra Modi already hamstrung by the opposition's strength the Rajya Sabha. A more politically inclusive approach towards the opposition is what the Doctor will definitely prescribes.
