Pakistan lose to Ireland in Hockey World League, out of Rio Olympics race

Pakistan got a shocking defeat to Ireland by 0-1 in a play-off match in Hockey World League and with this defeat Pakistan has failed to qualify for the next year's Rio Olympics.

Pakistan's loss to Ireland in the play-off match for sixth to eighth spots means that they can not finish above seventh position in the tournament and the Olympics spots for 12 teams from both in World League Semifinals can not go below sixth spot.

This was their last chance to quality for the 2016 Rio Olympics as the already lost the finals against India in the Asian games in Incheon last year.

Pakistan have been among the mos successful hockey teams as they have won three gold medals in the Olympics while India are having eight gold medals and 4 for Germany.

Pakistan was also not able to qualify for the World Cup last year.That was the first time they were failed to qualify for the World Cup, which they have won most number of times than any other team.

"This is a sad day for Pakistan Hockey," said Pakistani captain Muhammad Imran.

"We had a few chances but failed to convert them. We were misfiring throughout the tournament," he added.

"I feel sorry for the hockey lovers in Pakistan who always expect a lot from the national side," Imran said.

For Ireland team, this is their first victory over Pakistan in 11 encounters.

The goal by Alan Sothern in a penalty corner in the 46th minute proved to be a match winning goal for Ireland.

"The things did not go well for us in some previous matches but I am elated that we are emerged winners today," said Irish captain David Harte after winning the match.
